We liked Delhi 6 in parts. The song Masakkali is already on everybody’s lips and Rahman’s music has ensured that Delhi 6 was a most awaited movie. Delhi 6 is a movie set in Old Delhi’s Chandni Chowk area. Roshan comes back from New York to help his ailing grandmother.

Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor make a good pair though using Ramleela to communicate multiple messages makes the movie cryptic. Elaborate background for monkeyman story takes focus away from both the central love story and communal tension in Chandni Chowk.

Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra has done a decent job in creating Chandni Chowk environment. Rishi Kapoor is probably the most stylish character in the movie and also has the best dialogues. He is getting better with every new movie.

Best thing about the movie is music by Rahman. Second best is Chandni Chowk and movie would have done really well if it has a decent and consistent story that doesn’t leave audience confused about ‘message from the movie’.

Our advice to readers is to watch the movie but don’t keep your expectations too high.

Movie Name: Billu Barber
Music: Pritam
Rating: * * *

I heard somewhere that a movie automatically gets 1 extra star for having Irrfan Khan in star cast. This one gets 2 stars for casting him in lead role another two for a good story and Shahrukh’s touching monologue. But my overall rating would be three because editing of the movie is botched at best. Songs are inserted forcefully and except once are totally unrelated to the story.

Irrfan Khan was probably the best choice for Billu, only other actor of current times who could have pulled it off is Manoj Vajpayee. Lara Dutta has played a villagor wife and children definitely add character to the movie.

Cinematographer gets our thumbs up for all village scenes including riverside scenes. Songs are catchy and have added enough glamour with Priyanka, Kareena and Deepika Padukone. It’s readily understable why these songs feel totally out of place in a village story.

A lot of time is spent in character development of Asrani, Om Puri and other minor characters. The basic plot is rather simple and small so it forces director to spend more time in showing awe for a superstar. It doesn’t go overboard like Slumdog did, but does show the superstart mania that clouds Indian minds.

Rating: * * * 1/2
Dasvidaniya is a touching movie. It’s very surprising that it doesn’t leave you heavy hearted though it could have. Vinay Pathak deliveres a low key but powerful performance. Ranvir Shorey plays a rather colorful role but doesn’t go unnoticed in a small role. Looks like Vinay, Ranvir, Rajat and Neha have become a standard package offering of some kind. We saw them together (in different combinations) in Bheja Fry, Mithya before.

Director Shashant Shah has done a good job at not making another Anand. The end is different, simple and assumes that audience is intelligent enough to understand what happened. Unlike Rajesh Khanna in Anand or Shahrukh Khan in several moviees there is no melodrama in death.

Kailash Kher has done a good job with Music and has intertwined “Alvida” throughout the movie in seemless manner. Overall a good movie that our readers are adviced to watch.

Movie Name: Luck By Chance
Director: Zoya Akhtar
Starring: Farhan Akhtar, Juhi Chawla, Dimple Kapadia, Rishi Kapoor, Sanjay Kapoor, Konkona Sen Sharma
Rating: * * * *

Is Farhan Akhtar talented or just lucky? I think he is both. He has set new standards as a director, his debut film Rock On was superhit and with Luck By Chance he has established himself as a mature actor in Hindi Film industry.

Zoya Akhtar has managed to get the emotional rollercoaster in the film right. The movie moves at a slow but natural pace and supporting actors have delivered some cool performances.

Rishi Kapoor is likeable in his avatar as a establish movie producer launching his failed actor brother Sanjay Kapoor as a director. I never liked SK as an actor but here he managed to deliver a good performance with his dialogue “Ham bhi actor the.” (very true for him).

At times Luck By Chance looked liked a Madhur Bhandarkar creation showing the bad reality of hindi cinema world. Music was put at the right places and went well with movie’s mood.

Did we see Aamir and Shahrukh in the same movie? Yes, that’s true. They didn’t share the screen but they were both part of the same movie. Hrithik, Dimple Kapadia, Juhy Chawal and Konkona Sen Sharma were good but Farhan and Rishi Kapoor stole the show.

Movie may not be a commercial super-hit or critic’s favorite either but it sure is entertaining and is definitely worth a watch.

Disappointing is how I would describe Chandni Chowk to China (CC2C). Akshay Kumar was ruling the hearts and had already taken the King title from King Khan but he would want to forget he did this movie as soon as he can.

The plot is built on tip of castle made of cards, it blows away to pieces in the very beginning. When you want to throw someone out of China you throw them from Great Wall of China. That’s a cool concept.

Akshay has tried hard to look comic and manages to pull the trick in some scenes. Ranvir Shorey deliveres a good performance but I definitely thought he could have done much better. Where was his comic timing? Mithun had some good dialogues and was a good supporting actor while Deepika was good in some action sequences. Her James Bond style gadgets were not impressive and final fight paled in front of other stunts in the movie.

Akshay’s training was the high point of film and was definitely well executed with a good mix of comedy and action. I was hoping to see Jackie Chan style fights and found very few scenes of that kind.

I hope this is not where the new king of bollywood starts going downhill. He should try to include Katrina in the cast because she sure has been lucky for him.

An evolving face is what comes to mind when one hears big numbers and fat pay checks being handed to film stars in Bollywood - big budgets, big sets, big stars, big salaries, etc. Recession and a slowing economy seem to have hit everything but the film industry with bigger and more glamorous projects being signed and produced. This has sadly affected the overall quality and essence of movies, with nonsense scripts being churned into even sillier movies. These days countless movies are being made and less surprisingly, even the most stupid ones have managed to make lots of money at the box office owing to clever marketing and promotional tactics. Here are 5 absolutely senseless and otherwise flop Bollywood movies that still earned decent profits at the Box office:

Singh is Kinng: We have to admit it. No matter it starred Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, the film had less sense than any movie of the year. The script was a well-washed desi version of a stereotypical villager and the storyline had no story whatsoever. Still, it managed to make more than 100 crores at the box office!

Sarkar Raj: Add the glamour of the Bachchan family and the controversial name of Ram Gopal Verma to a film and you have a sure-fire winner – even if the movie is nothing but a bag of dust. Sarkar Raj earned 85% of its invested money in the first week itself in spite of getting mixed reviews and a fluctuating screen presence.

Tara Rum Pum: A sadly-distressed Indian remake of the Tom Cruise starring Days of Thunder, Tara Rum Pum had nothing more than a copied story, some vaguely romantic songs and a depressed aura. Still it somehow covered more than just profits at the box office.

Saawariya: Talk about hype and over indulgence and Saawariya comes to mind. The film launched Ranbir and Sonam Kapoor but failed to impress the audience with its gloomy and electric blue reels. But because it was a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film (the man who made Black), it could earn at the box office.

Jhoom Barabar Jhoom: It is difficult to believe to that the man behind blockbusters such as Saathiya and Bunty aur Bubli could make such a trashy piece. We have Amitabh Bachchan humouring the audience over styled and near-clownish costumes, a senseless storyline and an earner at the Box office. It is time that Bollywood changed the rules of measuring a film’s success.

If Page 3 from Madhur Bhandarkar was good, Fashion does justice to his reputation for making excellent movies. Meghna Mathur (Priyanka Chopra) wanted to become a model (super-model) and story of a middle class girl becoming a super model is shown nicely in the movie. I think Meghna got it quite easily in the movie…the real life would be more difficult.

Kangana Ranaut looks as ugly as she always looks and manages to put a good act first as an arrogant super model and later as a failed lunatic model. Madhur involves the real news including wardrobe malfunctions and drug abuse (remember Gitanjali?) in the movie and shows the emotional impact the characters have.

It’s hard to understand why all designers in Fashion believed in aadmi hoon aadmi se pyaar karta hoon. Janet Sequeria (Mugdha) is a surprise package but she was not recognizable from her posters.

Hindi movies always have a different story line from a typical hollywood movie; and audience likes the running around the trees, songs and dance sequences. They have grown up seeing the hindi movie in this format. But the movie makers forgot that the same set of people have been given healthy doses of excellent animation films including Finding Nemo and recently Kung-Fu Panda and Wall-E. Making this film the bollywood way didn’t go well with audience and the movie didn’t do that well on the box office.

A week story line and lack of ‘glamour’ didn’t help the movie either. Saif and Kareena were fine as voice over artists but the sidekicks did better. Jaaved Jaffrey was like the donkey of Shrek (Eddie Murphy) and was a saving grace for the movie. The cat was plain irritating after watching the Shrek cat with Antonio Banderas’s voice.

The animations were good and some parts were done nicely. Puns on Charlie’s Angels and other movies were well executed.

Jugal Hansraj should try hard next time.

This is not a movie review. We are wondering where did the planned movie Munna Bhai Chale America go.

You can see the very likable trailer here. We liked the trailer and would definitely like to see the moving come out.
