Even before its release, the first look of movie “Saat Khoon Maaf” is grabbing lot of eyeballs that features the leading lady Priyanka Chopra absolutely in a different role with negative shades. Adapted from Ruskin Bond’s book – Susanna’s seven husbands, the movie revolves around Susanna portrayed by Priyanka Chopra and her desire to search for true love. Playing Susanna in Saat Khoon Maaf is indeed one of the challenging roles in Priyanka’s career as her role undergoes various transitions in terms of appearance.
After portraying negative shades in her earlier movies- Yakeen and Aitraaz, Priyanka is once again donning the garb of an enigmatic woman named Susanna whose charm is hard to resist. The movie also features dynamic versatile actors Naseeruddin Shah, John Abraham, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Irrfan Khan, Annu Kapoor, Vivaan Shah and Russian actor Aleksandr Dyachenko as seven husbands. After success of Kaminey, Priyanka is teaming up again with director Vishal Bharadwaj and UTV motion pictures hoping to recreate the magic with the upcoming dark thriller “Saat Khoon Maaf”.
Even the soundtrack of this movie is receiving outstanding responses from masses all over. Slated to release on 18th Feb 2011, Saat Khoon Maaf will be really a different visual treat to discover the real intention of Susanna and her motive behind killing her seven husbands.
Gosh! Everyone’s so excited about Saat Khoon Maaf! I’ve never seen so much interest for a woman centric movie before! And I am way to waiting to see Priyanka Chopra…. She has done outstanding job…
7 KHOON MAAF is a musical feast as well as listening delight experience, showcasing varied genres, styles and formats… Though cinematically packaged and quirkily erotic, the film fails to thrill or evoke any other emotion
Its one heck of a movie..if you have nothing to do in life and want to waste money you can go to this movie..her acting is pathetic never justified for her sins….infact only 15 rows max were filled in my screen, top of that half of them walked away during second half.!! so u decide viewers whay u wanna do
My first reaction on seeing Saath Khoon Maaf was; Is India ready for this? This is possibly not for those who worship at the altar of Shila and Munni. This film has set new standards and raised the bar so high for Bollywood that it is doubtful if any film, past, present or in the near future will be able to come close to, leave alone cross it.
The film is essentially an exploration, a treatise on the intricacies of the human mind, portrayed through the extraordinary life of Suzanna, played with stunning brilliance and maturity by the young Priyanka Chopra. Almost all the characters in the film are complex and multi faceted, a refreshing change from the one dimensional people we have come to see of late in our films.
It would be an understatement to say that the casting is simply superb. Each and every actor fits their role like the proverbial glove, or maybe they all reserve their very best to give to Vishal Bardwaj. He is truly the wizard who can draw out the finest that an actor is capable of giving.
Niel Nithin Mukesh is unrecognizable as he well and truly disappears into Major Rodriguez. One can almost feel the menace in him. The jealousy, the impotent rage of being handicapped and the consequent effect it has on achingly young Suzanna. It also establishes the unusual bonding between her and her servants, her only family.
There is crackling chemistry between Suzanna and playboy-rock star Jimmy; John Abraham, the gigolo whose career she promotes. Her hurt and devastation at his betrayal simply seeps thru to the viewers, one can almost condone Suzanna’s role in his death.
The relationship between Wasiullah Khan (Irfan Khan) and Suzanna gives the maximum insight into her complicated emotional state, so desperate is her need to be loved and be in love that she is willing to put herself through such emotional and physical trauma, willing to sublimate her identity, her religion and herself to such an extent that when it snaps she can only try to redeem herself by obliterating it completely. Watch this part to know why the world comes knocking on India’s doors asking for Irfan.
Again with Vronsky (Aleksandr Dyachenko) she only sees what she wants to see. She does not dig deep for she does not want to find things that may not be to her liking. When she discovers she has made a mistake once more, her desolation is complete and she is overcome with bitterness.
It is with Keemat lal that one can see the conniving, calculating side of her. Her ability to use her sexuality in a cold calculating manner when cornered. Keemath turns victim simply because he underestimates her. Annu Kapoor rivals the veterans in his excellent portrayal of Keemat Lal.
Nazeruddin Shah as Dr. Modhusudhon Tarafdar, the Bengali professor is brilliant, the nuances, the accent the body language…. It is in his perfidy that finally sends Suzanna over the edge.
Last but definitely not least is Vivan. It is an understatement to say he has lived up to expectations. He has surpassed it. He is has given a retrained, understated and supremely confident performance as the backbone of the entire saga. He is Suzanna’s eternal love, confidant and alter ego. He is a multifaceted personality able to love at different levels. The scene when he is so casually feeding and looking after the old Goonga, the way he relates to Konkana, the way he deals with his inner turmoil, Wow! Unbelievable that he’s only twenty one.
As far as the film itself, it’s quite simply a visual poetry soaked in lyrical, Shakespearian grandeur. Vishal is a master craftsman with a superb mastery over his tools. He has extracted the best possible from all his technicians.
The camera glides effortlessly thru Suzanna’s life sometimes watching, sometimes retreating and sometimes participating. No strange angles or gimmicks distracting the viewer. The lighting and look is something never before seen in a Hindi film.
The whispering visual effects are woven gently into the fabric of the film to take the story further, nothing loud or obvious here, nothing screaming for attention, yet it’s very much there, enriching the narrative, enhancing the tale and contributing to the visual extravaganza with silken smoothness, not easy to spot them.
Music and Vishal are synonymous. The song Darling catches on from the word go, Rekha Bhardwaj and Usha Utup! what a unique combo and it works! Bekaraan sung by Vishal Bhardwaj himself is haunting and beautiful. O Mama rocks, Gulzar is gifted it seems, with reverse aging, lyrics for a rock song!!! It does not get better than this. A diverse bouquet indeed;
Brilliant and extraordinary, this is a milestone in the journey of Indian films. Missing it would be like missing a significant moment in the history of Hindi cinema.
movie is worth watching…priyanka looks very sensuous ..song ‘darling..’is very melodios..and the best thing is that u feel like every half an hour u r watching different film ..with absolutely differnt prianka..may be some part u wont like..but at the end u feel its value for money and time.
Getting mix opinion from all over.. at least would like to watch this movie once… however the reviews be… One watch seems must for & Khoon Maaf…
Priyanka Chopra has justified herself as an established actress earlier. I guess among the available bunch of actress, it is only she who can play such characters, with a touch of panache. I am more than sure ‘Saat Khoon Maaf’ will be another hallmark performance of hers.

An educated audience would have several unanswered questions after the movie is over. Otherwise casting, screenplay, locations are all good. Simply loved Priyanka’s acting, she not far away from becoming a versatile actress.
The film’s score and songs were composed by Vishal Bhardwaj and the lyrics were penned by Gulzar. The official soundtrack contains seven songs and two reprise versions. The soundtrack was digitally released on Ovi (Nokia) on 21 January 2011. It was physically released on 24 January 2011. The soundtrack received overall positive reviews. The song “Darling” is based on the Russian folk song Kalinka, and has been given credit for it on the album cover. The song “Tere Liye” performed by Suresh Wadkar, was not used in the film.
Priyanka Chopra stealing the limelight and all fade left for her seven husbands. Great to see a woman centric movie and how Indian audience is welcoming and accepting such roles. After fashion, would this get her another National award? Looking forward to that. Ruskin Bond might said he was treated very well during the shooting and got a lot of freedom of choice! Not many writers get this! Lucky he!
Priyanka is what a treat to watch! I love to see her performing negative roles and that too when combined with dance and music. Ruskin Bond is my favorite writer and luckily, I have got a chance of meeting him when I was in India. I watched this movie only because of the combination of my favorite Indian actress and writer and I enjoyed.
I agree with my fellow commenters. Priyanka is a lovely, beautiful woman and when it comes to negative roles, then that naughty expression in her eyes drives me crazy! I cannot understand the dialogues though, but simply seeing her is fun. John Abraham is great too. I want to see them in lead roles as lovers, they make a good couple!
They make a great couple! I agree with Taras. I too loved the movie as I already read Ruskin Bond books and like them. Was great to see Priyanka play the role.
I like Priyanka, but still feel that Kareena Kapoor could have performed better in this movie. She is more versatile than Priyanka, and seems that the latter has stopped improving and changing!
I agree with you Albert, Kareena could have done much better. She cannot dance like Priyanka , but better with other things like attitude and vamp look. I saw both of them in Aitraaz and Priyanka performed better, but in this one it could be vice versa.
I liked the author’s plot. No one could know that Priyanka is playing a negative character. She fit into various roles quite perfectly and I loved her pair up with John. Wonder how she still looks so young!
